A Production Line from CLP Design?

The hammered black production hood with silver trim

While we love our custom hoods (and our clients seem to, as well), we’ve noticed that a custom hood is still out of the price range and time schedule of most people looking for a kitchen appliance. We’ve also noticed that in the mid-range market (around $2,000-$3,500), there really aren’t many options for people. There are bland stainless boxes from a dozen manufacturers whose chief selling point other than function seems to be just that they don’t clash with the other stainless boxes in a kitchen. And then there are very contemporary styles from a few manufacturers, mostly either following Zephyr’s design lead with the beautiful Brunner and Cheng lines or following the Italian fashions for minimalist stainless designs. But there is a clear gap in the market for a moderately-priced range hood which is both attractive and fully functional.

The “Little Red Riding Hood”

This is the hood that turned a thousand heads. Displayed here above a Diva 900 range and a pair of customized Blomberg dishwasher/cabinets, this is most likely the most expensive range hood ever built. Yes, its made of authentic parts from the 1957 Chevy Bel Air. Yes, the lights and the stereo work. Even the tires and rims are real (the tires were heavily coated to prevent the obvious fire hazards). And yes, there is a fully functional pro-series 600cfm blower inside it. One of the best parts about showing off this hood was watching people stop to ask if we could cut their favorite cars in half to build a range hood out of them.

Lautrec range hood with Elegance patterning

High-gloss elegance pattern on Lautrec frame

As a showpiece for a kitchen with gold accents throughout, from lace window treatments to gold-leafed cabinet faces, we built this extravagant hood on a Lautrec frame. The Elegance pattern repeats across the lower tier of the hood, with suspender straps to separate the patterns. The upper curve is a basic hammered pattern, which dies at the ceiling at a crown constructed with our Athena lip treatment. The entire hood was coated with a special high-gloss clearcoat for extra sheen and reflectiveness.

“Maximalism”: new patterns that embody lavishness, boldness, and luxury

72″ wide zinc range hood with Hanging Gardens pattern

Decoration is everywhere… and our appliances know how to carry that off with style!

Maybe it’s election year politics, or maybe it’s just blissful wrongheadedness. For whatever reason, a new optimistic mood through the country is bringing with it a taste for lavish “maximalist” decoration that has been neglected for years. Traditional, contemporary, and postmodern styles are all showing new decorative elements, overflowing with ornamentation. CLP Design is responding to this trend by reaching deep into our history and reinventing elaborate historical patterns with a very new look.
