Custom Lautrec Range Hood

Just got some beautiful installation photos from a customized Lautrec style range hood with a light weathered bronze finish we did earlier in the year. The floral frieze was built up with layers of stamped metal similar to the way a wood hood would be built — just a whole lot heavier. This hood was finished in a very light tone and a satin finish to set off the dark cherry cabinets and granite counters. Speaking of which, I’m a little bit in love with these cabinets, especially the island corbels. Will have to find out who made them and post that information in an update.

New Work: Muse Hotel

We were chosen to participate in the Puccini Group’s highly anticipated redesign of the Muse Hotel in Times Square. The new look, headed by senior designer Jane Humphrey, called for a lobby which overwhelmed and dazzled with a huge variety of materials, including assorted brass and bronze finishes throughout.
Wide view of Muse lobby
Our contribution, a massive (4 feet deep by 8 feet long) mock fireplace hood, stood as a centerpiece of the entire area, as well as serving to separate the lobby from the bar area. The hood was produced with a tromp-l’oeil painted steel frame, sheathed in six sheets of bronze with a bright finish. Hidden inside behind a blackened wire grate is a digital projector casting a looped video of flames flickering on a glass screen above a bronze log sculpture. Delivering this hood to Manhattan in the middle of a blizzard was no joke. Read the rest of this entry »

Cream white Hanging Gardens pattern hood over Cream CornuFé range

This display, from Artisan Kitchen and Bath in New Orleans, shows off one of our hoods in a classically Creole kitchen design. The vintage finished island with its walnut top set off all the tones in our hood and the Ivory CornuFé range nicely. Read more about the various elements in this display here.

This 72″ wide, 35″ tall Cézanne frame was outfitted with dual Vent-a-Hood B200 motors for serious customizable extraction power. But the power inside is well hidden by the exterior beauty. Our Hanging Gardens pattern extends over the entire body, with a Fleur-de-Lis lip treatment below and a custom metal crown at the ceiling.

Black Hanging Gardens hood installed

An elegant treatment for a range hood to accent the Cluny range from Lacanche below it, this hood uses our standard Cézanne frame shape without the top lip to show off its pattern.

To meet the architectural requirements of the room, we built this hood with a hole in the left side to carry ductwork across the ceiling and out the side wall.

  • Frame Style: Cézanne
  • Dimensions: 36″ (h) x 39″ (w)
  • Pattern: Hanging Gardens
  • Lip Treatment: Trefoil Flowers
  • Finish Tone: Classic Black with Golds

A Production Line from CLP Design?

The hammered black production hood with silver trim

While we love our custom hoods (and our clients seem to, as well), we’ve noticed that a custom hood is still out of the price range and time schedule of most people looking for a kitchen appliance. We’ve also noticed that in the mid-range market (around $2,000-$3,500), there really aren’t many options for people. There are bland stainless boxes from a dozen manufacturers whose chief selling point other than function seems to be just that they don’t clash with the other stainless boxes in a kitchen. And then there are very contemporary styles from a few manufacturers, mostly either following Zephyr’s design lead with the beautiful Brunner and Cheng lines or following the Italian fashions for minimalist stainless designs. But there is a clear gap in the market for a moderately-priced range hood which is both attractive and fully functional.
